Chronicling Gay Life in and Around Philadelphia

I really need to get more blog-active

Posted by phillygay on November 6, 2007

Yeah, I totally need to get better at blogging.  I used to be able to blog all the time (I used to use blogspot.com) and I could add little thoughts or comments all day long when things weren’t happening at work.  But suddenly, the company I work for blocked us from accessing any and all blogging sites.  The filters say the sites are blocked due to “Dating & Personals.”  Now, I can see blocking match.com or manhunt.com for that reason but I don’t quite understand why we’re not allowed to blog during our lunch hours.  It’s still a little bit unclear to me how writing a blog is going to help us get dates.

Anyway, I moved to my new apartment on October 27 and I must say, it’s surprising to me that it’s simply another unit in the same complex. I am way on the other side of the community and it’s like a different world. Over there, it was like a total ghetto and the apartment itself was nowhere near as cool as where Willona & Penny lived on Good Times. But over here, everything looks cleaner, with better views and lots more parking. And all my appliances are brand spankin’ new. Never-before-used washer, dryer, fridge, and oven. Well, almost all: The dishwasher is old. (I have no clue why they’re replacing all but one appliance but I’m grateful for what I have.)

I “christened” the place on day nine by having a date. I haven’t dated anyone since the ending in July of a rather disastrous relationship. But the whole thing happened very quickly. Though I met him years ago, we’d never verbalized how we felt for one another until Friday. So we decided to hang out on Sunday and we ended up spending the evening at my place, doing nothing in particular. Just having some drinks, listening to music, and talking.

I have no idea whether that will go anywhere but he’s a real sweet guy, he’s totally hot, and I really liked waking up with him next to me. I know what you’re thinking so let me address it right now: Normally a first date wouldn’t sleep over. But normally a first date doesn’t take place at my apartment and normally the guy wouldn’t have to drive 40 miles to get home in the middle of the night. But I’m not exactly making excuses: I’m very happy that he stayed the night!

Are we really THAT ugly?

Posted by phillygay on October 19, 2007

Philadelphia has the ugliest people in the country, according to Travel & Leisure Magazine.  They had 60,000 responses in an online survey and Philadelphia took the prize.  We are uglier than Washington, Dallas, San Antonio, and twenty-one other cities.

When accosted with the news, city Councilman Darrel Clarke said, “I’m a single guy so I can say, in all honesty, that while I don’t traditionally look at men to determine how attractive they are, I can tell you that we have the most attractive women of any city.”  What a fitting time to assert one’s heterosexuality.  (Come on:  You don’t think it’s the gays who are making this city so ugly, do ya?!)

For anyone wondering, Miami came in dead-last.  Respondents seem to think everyone in Miami is beautiful.  Well, I’ve been to Miami and I can tell you unequivocally…  Aw, shit.  Why fight it?  They’re right.  {sigh}

Anyway, I am fairly certain the survey didn’t ask which city is ugliest and we won.  They asked which city has the best looking people…and we lost.  If it makes any Philadelphians feel better, we ranked 14th for intelligence.  Those sexy beasts in Miami came in 23rd!

The Start of Something Big?

Posted by phillygay on October 16, 2007

Hello and welcome to my brand new blog!  My name is Michael James and I’m a 33-year-old gay guy living just outside of Philadelphia.  There are so many fun and interesting things about gay life & culture in this region and I intend to start chronicling it to let people know what’s up.

This will surely start out as a personal blog but I have some plans to make things more informative, interactive, and fun.  I’m hoping to make a big, splashy launch around December but we’ll have to wait and see.  There’s a bit of an initial investment involved and December is a hard time to make investments!

Wish me luck!
